Today’s competitive culture: succeed or fail

What determines success or failure? Conducive atmosphere? Capabilities? Situations?

Could be any. We may not have complete control over that.

But we have control over our response to results. Our internal state generates the feelings of happiness or sadness on results. This knowledge, that we have the ability to control our response, is the differentiator of success or failure.

But,

as fire is covered by smoke, mirror by dust, embryo by womb, so this knowledge is shrouded by — take your pick — feelings, ambition, unreasonable expectation, anger at competition, our own limitations,…

Bhagavad Gita 3.25

When we attain this knowledge, that gives us the equanimity to handle the results and compete stronger the next time.

Case Study: Bruce Lee on secret of his success: “I don’t have a perfect body. My right leg is roughly an inch shorter than my left, that is why I put my right leg forward in my stance… Also, I am short-sighted, therefore, I specialise in close encounters. I have converted my disadvantages into advantages.” He did not know English well, but was the first Chinese to be invited to Hollywood.

The clamor to compete or perish is not the be-all and end-all of existence. It is simply an ultimatum meant to spur people to succeed in life.
